Health care is an important part of the Dutch economy. Life expectancy is high. The population is large and ageing, people are getting wealthier, patients are quicker to speak up for themselves, and there are new medical procedures. This places a heavy burden on health care, in both financial and human terms.
Ten percent of the workforce is employed in the care sector. That is not nearly enough. The Netherlands has a chronic shortage of care workers.
